What virus could one possibly have if they have mono-type symptoms but test negative for mono.?I have an a18yr old daughter who was very active and athletic up untill now. Last yr she had mono-type symptoms for 9 months (give or take). She had several blood tests, all coming back negative, I took her to an infectious disease doctor and neurologist. No one seems to know the answer. The only clue other than that I can possibly provide is the fact that she went on a Carribian Cruise the summer before she got sick, not sure if thats a component in the whole event of things or not. Her Sr. yr of high school she sat out of cheerleading most of the yr b/c she was too sick to continue. This yr, shes in her first yr of college. Her day to day life is 'tollerable' but if she tries to do anything that requires alot of engergy such as tumbling (which she used to avidly) and she also tried to complete a lifeguard course that she had done a few yrs ago with no problem but this time her body wouldnt allow her to. I wish I had some answers, shes way too young to be restricted physically. Help

They should check her for CMV, or cytomegalovirus. It is similar to the vitus that causes mono. There is also a virus known as HHV-6 that can cause similar symptoms. I am not sure where they are with HHV-6 testing. CMV testing is widely available.

Could possibly be an autoiimune condition too. She should see an autoimmune specialist.

I felt like that, thought I had mono, for about a month. It was terrible. I'm only 21 so we're not too far apart in age. I tested negative for flu and mono, so one doctor just told me to let it run its course as it was probably a virus.

I saw my family doctor and he was unsure as well, but did blood tests to check all kinds of levels. He was concerned I had lupus, but the initial test was negative.

What I had may have been caused by elevated blood pressure and rapid heart rate. Once I got that under control I felt better, but it really could be a coincidence.

What kind of blood tests has your daughter had? Hypothyroidism (which I also have) can cause a slew of problems that make you feel like you're dying, so low thyroid hormone can cause similar symptoms. Iron can cause weakness and fatigue as well.

My best advice is to not give up; don't let a doctor tell you there's nothing wrong. I kept testing negative for a benign type of tumor in my finger but finally one doctor did a minor invasive procedure and thought he saw something that the MRI and bone scans didn't catch. His colleague agreed to do surgery to explore the painful area. He removed a small red spot from under my nail bed, and the biopsy came back positive for the glomus tumor. I tell you this story because it was a terrible experience -- I knew something was wrong but no one was able to help. Just keep looking for doctors and keep researching the internet for ideas. Don't give up, sometimes it can be something completely unlikely that most doctors wouldn't even consider. Eventually you'll find one that's seen a similar case before and can help you!

  1. I have hypothyroidism as well. I get sweaty and experience hot flashes. I am also prone to irritability. So far, desiccated porcine tablets has positive effects on me.
