Can pneumonia be fatal in people with advanced HIV/AIDS?

Do you find what you need? Look here!

Can pneumonia be fatal in people with advanced HIV/AIDS?So my 64-year-old father contracted HIV around eight or nine years ago. Additionally, he contracted Hepatitis C from sharing needles and was recently removed from the liver transplant list due to his history of alcohol abuse. He also currently has a severe mouth infection due to years of methamphetamine abuse and poor dental hygiene. Yes, both he and I understand that he made some terrible decisions and is paying for them dearly.

He has been under my care for several months now and I'm trying my best to care for him under the circumstances. He still smokes despite having part of his left lung removed two years ago due to tuberculosis. Within the last few weeks he has developed a case of double pneumonia (according to my sister, who is a registered nurse) and I'm beginning to fear that he may be on his deathbed. We cannot afford hospice due to the fact the we let his insurance lapse around a month ago. We simply ran out of funds.

Anyway, I'm afraid he may be on his last legs. His body is already weak enough, could this pneumonia be the final straw? We would appreciate your prayers. Thank you.

A simple cold could be enough to kill your father.

Folks don't die from HIV/AIDS, they die from the simplest things that they can't fight infection from due to the HIV/AIDS.

most assuredly :-( AIDS (auto immune deficiency syndrone), I do not have this awful disease, but I have had pneumonia more than once, first time I was 12, once you have had it, you NEVER get rid of the fluid in your lungs:-( making it easier to get sick again....and again. and it can kill anyone...

Pneumonia can be fatal to people in good health!

Yes, pneumonia and infection can certainly kill someone in a weakened state. This is not uncommon for anyone having a terminal illness. Usually something more minor than the disease is the straw that breaks the camels back so to speak. The body becomes so weakened that it cannot fight off an infection or pneumonia. If he does not have any income or even low income and very little assets, then he should qualify for state aid for his medical needs which would cover hospice.

Despite having no insurance, it still wouldn't hurt to call your local hospice. Many of them provide care for indigent patients.

Good luck, hold tight.
