I would like to know how much interferon for hep c costs.?My brother will start interferon/rib in about a month. He has 80/20 insurance and we would like to know how much it would cost for the prescriptions a month. He takes the pill once a day and the shot once a week?

There are many different types of interferon, but emedicine.com recommends interferon alfa-2b for hepatitis C so I'll go with that. It's brand name is Intron-A, and drugstore.com sells it for $ 1049.32/box. Each box contains an injection pen which delivers a total of 6 doses.

When I was on Pegasys in 2003, it cost $ 1495.00 for a monthly dose of 4 vials (1 a week). It may have come down since then. I think it was like $ 695.00 for the monthly supply of generic Ribivirin.

BTW - the treatment worked for me...so it's worth it. If your viral count goes down a lot after the first month then you have a very good chance of clearing it. I've been clear since 2004.
