what causes elevated liver enzymes in dogs? is this a dangerous condition? can anything be done for it?My sister has 3 dogs; 2 of them have elevated liver enzymes and the 3rd is being tested tomorrow.

It sounds like she may have allowing them to have chocolate..Or they have been into something, such as anti freeze,or pesticides, or some source of copper poisoning. Since all are exhibiting the symptoms, it is either something they all do, or Cushing's disease or hepatitis. Have they been vaccinated for hepatitus?

There are many disease processes that can cause elevated liver enzymes in dogs. There are some conditions that can cause increased liver enzymes that are not even related to the liver. Causes can depend on the age and the breed of the dog. Common causes of increased liver enzymes in dogs include Bile duct disease, Cushing's disease, diabetes, vascular shunt in the liver, toxins, and tumors. But there are many more causes as well even some parasites can cause liver disease the list is pretty long. The veterinarian will be the best person to interpret the cause of the increased liver enzymes based on the dog's clinical signs, other parameters in their blood work, other diagnostics (ultrasound, biopsy, x-rays) the breed and their age.
