What could cause liver enzymes to be elevated? My husband had a blood test done recently. Got a letter from his doctor that said his liver enzymes are elevated a bit. Just wondering what could be possible causes. Thanks.

Alcohol
unhealthy diet
medications he may be on

they're the commonest
then there are other liver diseases, gallstones and even nasty things like cancer.

usually with something serious they are massively elevated so it's more likely one of the top 3

My mother had elvated liver enzymes, she had a diet imbalance and diabetes. It could be inflammation like hepatitis, sclerosis, or a form of nutrition imbalance. I have too much vitamin A and too little anything else and had the same problem

Happened to my hubby, too. The doctor wasn't worried, and it went away on its own.

No one blood test is 100% accurate. The doctor
may do another set of tests to see if these enzymes
have returned to normal range.

Only one of the liver enzymes is specific to the liver
and that is the ALT since it is made mostly by the
liver cells, the other enzymes are made in other
organs also. Many things can effect the results
of these tests: like having an intramuscular
injection, exercising before the test is done,
or having a muscle injury.

The liver enzymes are not the only blood test done
if the doctor suspects a liver problem...there is
also the liver function tests (known as the Bilirubin,
INR, Albumin, Pt, PTT) and the liver viral tests to
see if a virus has entered the body and is using
the liver cells to replicate itself.

It is best to wait for the next testing to be done,
before being concerned. If they are slightly
elevated, it should not be much of a worry.
Medication can sometime cause them to rise
higher.

He should avoid all alcohol now and also
not take any medications that is not approved
of or prescribed by his doctors.

Liver enzymes can be higher when taking certain
medication, having a metabolic problem,
bone problem, infections, liver disease, heart
problem, biliary problem and others.

I hope this information has been of some help
Best wishes
