What do elevated liver enzymes mean?

What do elevated liver enzymes mean?Assuming there is no hepatitis. What could this suggest. My doctor said they were and that we would recheck them and go from there but what does this mean.

Hepatitis is the inflammation of the liver cells.
When people say hepatitis, it is usually in
reference to the viral hepatitis like Hepatitis A,
B,C,etc.

There are many causes of hepatitis besides
just the viral kind. Inflammation of the
liver cells can occur from : alcohol
consumption, medication toxification,
chemical exposure, biliary obstruction or
mal formation, fatty liver disease,
metabolic conditions, hereditary conditions,
and others.

No one blood test is 100% accurate. It
takes more than one to ensure this accuracy.
Exercising right before the test is taken can
elevate these levels and other things can
have an effect on this test also. It depends
on which liver enzymes are elevated and
how high they are. The liver enzymes give
the doctor an "idea" that there is something
wrong with the liver cells or that they are
damaged. The doctor also looks at
the "liver function tests" to see how the
liver cells are functioning to do the job needed
to keep the body healthy. He also does
the Viral test, like I mention above...to see
if the cause is a virus.

Just because the liver enzymes are elevated
now, doesn't necessarily mean they will
stay that way. Our body chemistry changes
constantly. However, if they do stay
elevated, the doctor will search to see what
the real cause is. It is important to tell
him all medication you are on, this includes
over the counter, herbs, herbal teas,
vitamins, minerals, and prescription prescribed
by other doctors. Medication go through
the liver first to be broken down before going
to the rest of the body. Also, it is important
not to drink alcohol...all liver patients are
told "no alcohol". Be as open as you
can with your doctor on all things...it will
help you diagnose you faster.

I hope you find out that your enzymes have
gone down. Some of the liver enzymes
are not specific just to the liver...there are
other organs and conditions that can cause
them to rise... Therefore,
it may not be a liver problem at all.
