Why is the Doctor testing me for Hepatitis????? Is this for real?June 30 I went to the drop in clinic about my sore arm i've had for 7 months. the dr ordered some xrays and a blood test since for the last week I had body aches. He tested a lot of things. I called the clinic back and they said since they were a drop in they only call about your tests if there is a reason to so I heard nothing from them. A week later I needed a prescription change and I saw a different doctor who had my chart. It was for the same arm issue. He changed my prescription and said nothing. After a week it wasn't working so I went back to the clinic last night and saw another doctor. He told me my arm was nothing to worry about and instead started talking about my "test results"from my blood test. He told me I had low b12 and some of my levels were high (even though the other dr signed off on them) and told me I should be tested for arthritus and hepatitus. I am so upset by this. Should they have not told me about this sooner? I'm worried I could have made my loved ones sick,,,and why on earth would I have hep B or C? Should I call the clinic and talk to them?

First, you should be asking the last doctor you saw why testing is needed. You must have had some elevated liver enzymes in order to need testing for Hepatitis. And, you can get hepatitis A from foods, B and others down from there are most often blood borne so, if you haven't had an exposure, this probably is not an option that you have this. Low B12 is very common - lots of women have this - it just depends on how low as to whether they treat it or not. Unless you are having joint issues, that would be the reason they would be testing for rheumatoid arthritis which might (and I say might) be the cause of your original arm pain. But, this might also come back negative. Slightly abnormal lab values not always require additional testing until the patient comes back several times with the same symptoms - then additional testing is ordered. That is why no testing was probably done on your second visit - because the original blood tests were only slightly abnormal. Abnormal blood tests do not aways mean something is wrong - they can be slightly low or high depending on your hydration status that day, whether you have any kind of mild illness - even a cold - can affect your blood tests and whether you ate or not before having the blood drawn. I would not get upset yet. I would be having a discussion with the last physician that you saw about what he thinks is going on and why he now wants to do additional blood tests and what he is looking for. A phone call to his nurse would be all it would take and she would get back to you with information from the doctor about these reasons. You need to ask questions while you are in the doctor's office and if you have additional questions, you need to call and leave those questions with his nurse. Find out what this doctor is looking for and then decide whether you want to go ahead with additional testing or not.
