KMA-IDF Oration 2008-Discovery of hepatitis E: The epidemic non-A, non-B hepatitis 25 years later

DISCOVERY OF HEPATITIS E The epidemic non-A, non-B hepatitis 25 years later. Prof. Mohammad Sultan Khuroo, MD, DM, FRCP (Edin.), FACP, Master American College of Physicians (Emeritus), Director Digestive Diseases Centre, Dr. Khuroo's Medical Clinic, Srinagar, Kashmir, India, E-mail: khuroo@drkhuroo.org; Website: www.drkhuroo.com Hepatitis E is one of the most important emerging infectious diseases. The disease was first recognized during an epidemic, which occurred in Kashmir valley in 1978. Since then, a lot of water has flown down the Jhelum River, the vehicle which had carried the infectious agent causing estimated 52000 cases of hepatitis with 1650 cases of fulminant hepatic failure and 1560 deaths. In this presentation, I shall recollect the events of past 25 years; review the challenges of today and look forward to future of hepatitis E. Transmission of the agent in a human volunteer was an extreme example for zest for knowledge and to uncover the truths of nature. Following this, excellent transmission studies of the agent in Cynomolgus established the biophysical properties of the agent. Cloning and sequencing of the agent had to wait for few years and was subsequently performed in 1990. Soon ELISA test was developed for the diagnosis of HEV infection. Following this excellent epidemiology studies on disease and molecular studies on the agent have been performed by a number of highly dedicated groups from a number of centers in the World. Of great importance is ...
