I have hepatitis C and I have been drinking for the past 3 weekends, Help?I haven't had a lot, just two drinks this weekend and probably two the past couple of weekends. I am having a hard time with this b/c I am so used to drinking when I go out with friends. I just found out a few months ago and I haven't actually begun treatment (meds) yet because my doc wants to wait for some new medication approved for next year, but I am worried that I have jeopardized my condition but drinking.
I may just be freaking out for no reason, but this morning I have been feeling a little sharp discomfort in my right side. I don't think it has anything to do with the hepatitis c or liver problems but I don't know......I am under a lot of stress right now with school, work, worrying about my health. I just felt like I needed to unwind and go out on the town with my friends and have some fun. And it's hard to do that without drinking alcohol.

Those few drinks probably did not jeopardize your health...but don't drink any more. Hep C is not caused by drinking. Hep C is a virus...which can be caused by blood transfusions, intravenous drug use, etc etc etc. However, drinking can worsen the condition of your liver, causing cirrhosis. Hep C can also cause cirrhosis of the liver...so stop drinking because you're doubling your chances of cirrhosis! Also, be very careful what medications you use...even too much tylenol etc. are bad for your liver. Try not to stress...many people live many, many years with Hep C. Discuss all this with your doctor. And until then you can go to the following link for more information: http://www.liverfoundation.org/abouttheliver/info/hepatitisc/

My mom has had Hepatitis C since she was 15 years old. She is 52 now. Just stay hydrated and you can drink, my mom always has. The sharp pains would be your kidneys needing hydration. I can't explain why, but the pain in the side has always been related to her HepC, and she has always called it kidney pain. I am not sure if they ever told my mom not to drink, I can see the logic in that but my mom has had Hep C for 37 years and alcohol never did any damage to her.

You need to stop drinking alcohol immediately. Although Hep C is a virus that is not caused by drinking alcohol, alcohol will damage the liver. Drinking alcohol accelerates the rate of liver damage. People who have Hep C should NEVER drink alcohol. The person who stated that it would be ok for you to continue drinking because it would not cause any damage is completely WRONG.
Even if you don't need meds yet, it is very important for you to talk to a Hep C specialist.
Also: Feeling the need to drink alcohol in order to unwind or have fun may indicate a problem.

Okay, if you want to live then stop drinking. Hepatitis C is as worst as HIV/AIDS and will cause other complications such as Cirrhosis(scarring of the Liver) and Hepatocellular Carcinoma(liver Cancer). There is no cure for a chronic liver disease and transplanted liver recipients will have to take drugs for the rest of their lives so the immune system will not reject the new liver. Liver Cancer is the 5th deadliest cancers in the world and survival in late stages is 5% for people who live up to 5 years. 90% of advanced liver cancer patients will die in a maximum of two year period. You have one liver and if you destroy it then you will die. I suggest you to locate a physician specializes in Gastroenterology and Hepatology to follow up with your treatment. you must discontinue drinking alcohol if you want to live.
