Is it possible to have acute hepatitis with low AST and ALT ?
Stephen R
It is possible but very unlikely. Transaminases (AST and ALT) are associated with cell breakdown and normal levels are from normal cellular turnover. Low transaminases can occur with cirrhosis, where the long term damage has lead to fibrosis and low numbers of cells. Acute hepatitis on top of cirrhosis would be associated with low transaminases.
